Due to lack of housing, the New Caledonians, mostly Kanaks, looking for work in the city built huts with recycled materials on vacant land on the peninsula of Nouville behind the University of New Caledonia and facing the downtown Noumea. The squats of Noumea would welcome today more than 8000 people in an agglomeration of approximately 160 000 inhabitants. November 2017
